There are many reasons to smile this month: the sun's out, the days are longer and we can almost smell the BBQ firing up. But a more important reason is that from the 13 May until the 13 June National Smile Month is upon us, and this year it's aiming to be bigger and better than ever.
So what's happening this year? From Smileathons to Brushathons, 2 minute challenges to Class dentist visits, the Oral Health Foundation is organising and encouraging anyone and everyone with an interest in good oral healthcare to get involved. It's not only health professionals that can participate; schools, community groups, colleges and workplaces are getting in on the fun to get more people smiling than ever.
This year DW has partnered up with Leicester City Council to sponsor the Smile Awards which aims to celebrate people and organisations in Leicester who have helped to improve oral health in creative and innovative ways. Not only are we sponsoring the Community Champion Award - which goes to an outstanding volunteer who has worked hard to improve oral health in the community - but we worked with LCC to create adverts, a banner stand, posters and the official ceremony booklet for the event.
We're proud to be a sponsor of this event and to continue our previous work in encouraging good oral health. In the last few years we have helped to produce a comprehensive range of design, print and promotional items to help promote oral hygiene both in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, working with the Oral Health Promotion Team in Nottingham, Leicester City Council and several NHS Organisations in the Midlands.
We had the opportunity to have some fun with our creative work for the Oral Health Promotion Team and produced award-winning storybooks and Tooth Fairy characters that we illustrated, designed and printed for their Teeth Tools for Schools initiative. We also created animations, educational packs, fun infographics and posters, water bottles, toothbrushing racks and supplies and charts, all with an eye-catching design that attracted teachers, parents and children alike.
Our animations were even shown in the Showcase and Broadway Cinemas in Nottingham, reaching a wide range of kids and adults and promoting oral health in new and exciting way. Another great product we worked on was dental passports that children took to the dentist to get stamped, bringing some excitement into the dentists waiting room and less dread to the dentists chair!
Overall the Brushing Buddies programme was used in 12 different schools across Nottingham West and reached thousands of children and parents, we're proud to have been a part of positive change and are ready this National Smile Month to continue to support and award people's hard work and to give them something to smile about!
