The Smile Awards have been set up to celebrate people and organisations based in Leicester who have helped to improve oral health through creative and innovative projects and practices.
It was great to be a sponsor at the recent awards ceremony held at the Leicester Tigers Stadium and we were proud to award the Community Champion award to Sufiya Ebrahim of Gohil's Dental Practice. It was a well-deserved award for her hard work and dedication to improving dental health in the city and showed what an asset she is to her community.
Sufiya is a Dental Nurse at Gohil's Dental Practice in the Spinney Hill area who endeavours to make messages accessible in the Asain community. She performs a vital job as language barriers might otherwise prevent people in the community from accessing important and essential information and advice. She has translated leaflets for non or limited English speaking patients at her practice and has been into the community to a factory to talk to the workers about the risks of mouth cancer, all in their own language.
DW have worked with Leicester City Council since 2013 on their city-wide campaign to combat tooth decay in the under-fives. The Healthy Teeth, Happy Smiles programme was launched with the aim to reduce tooth decay. In 2012, a staggering 53% of 5 year olds had tooth decay, this had decreased to 38% by 2017. The target was to achieve a 10% decrease by 2019, so this has been exceeded 2 years early, which is a fantastic achievement that was recognised and celebreated at the Smile Awards.
It was also a pleasure to sit with Alex Rushworth, the inspiring Keynote speaker, who wrote 'Open Wide... What's Inside?', a colourful childrens book that encourages them to look after their teeth in a fun and interactive way. Her passion and commitment to helping children echoed the achievements of all the deserving winners of the night which included; the Moti Smile Design Centre, Little Companions, The Imperial Avenue Infant School, Sufiya Ebrahim and the Healthy Child Programme Practitioner Team.
